Kudos to Princeton Patrol Officer Bill Kieffer For Safely Capturing the Prospect Avenue Bat
To the Editor:
Wednesday night, after we were asleep, I woke up to find a very large bat flying around our bedroom. We immediately went downstairs and closed the door. We weren’t certain what to do next but had read that several rabid bats had been captured recently on Linden Lane. We decided to call the Princeton Police for assistance. Within minutes, Patrol Officer Bill Kieffer arrived with bat-catching gloves and related equipment. It took a bit of effort and specialized bat hunting skills but we were able to catch the bat safely and put it into a bat can so that it could be examined for rabies. Normally, this is a function I would do myself but given that some bats in Princeton carry rabies we felt the police should be called in. Bill did a great job. He was calm, patient, friendly, effective, efficient, and above all, sympathetic. Please place this letter in Officer Kieffer’s file. Keep up the great work.
