Another Response to the Letter Calling For Accountability on the Part of Cyclists

To the Editor:

In response to Judith Koubek’s letter in last week’s Town Topics, surely roads are not made solely for cars, but for all vehicles, including those with only two wheels and without polluting engines. She is quite right to say that it is difficult to see cyclists at night, and I agree that cyclists should have lights fore and aft to minimize this problem and cyclists should obey the law regarding stop lights and red lights. But when it comes to breaking the law, New Jersey State law requires motorists to stop for pedestrians on or about to cross the road at designated crossings. If I had a nickel for every time I have tried to cross the road at such crossings and cars have not stopped I would also be rich.

Since motorists like Ms. Koubek seem so unwilling to share the road with cyclists, surely this makes the case for designated bike lanes even stronger?
