A group of seven seniors helped the Princeton High girls’ hockey team enjoy a memorable season last winter as it went 7-8 and won the ‘B’ bracket at the WILHMA (Women’s Interscholastic Hockey League of the Mid-Atlantic) tournament.

With the graduation of those players and the transfer of star defenseman Allie Callaway to the Hun School, PHS is going to have a different look this winter.

PHS head coach Christian Herzog acknowledges that his squad faces a period of adjustment.

“This is realistically a transition season,” said Herzog, whose team started the 2015-16 campaign by losing 7-2 to Summit last Wednesday and is slated to play at Princeton Day School on December 16 and at Pingry on December 18.

“I have some girls with no experience. There is a big void. The emphasis for the season is bringing back the passion for the game for a lot of these girls. Nothing is set in stone.”

PHS does return junior forward Maggie Herring whose family has been a rock of the program with both older sisters, Lucy ’15 and Keely ’12, having been leading scorers for the Little Tigers.

“Maggie has played a lot of hockey and she is an assistant captain this year; I am looking to her to step and lead a little bit,” said Herzog of Herring, who had 15 goals and 10 assists last year to tie for the team high in points with her older sister Lucy.

“I am definitely looking for her to generate points but she has to utilize those other players because it is too easy to key up on just her and she will be pointless the whole game.”

Senior captain Isabelle Sohn (4 goals and 3 assists in 2014-15) and senior assistant captain Sophia Corrodi (3 goals and 1 assist) will also be key players at forward.

On the blue line, sophomore Alexa Zammit (4 goals and 1 assist) figures to spearhead the PHS defense.

“Alexa Zammit is going to be my strongest defenseman,” asserted Herzog. “She looks strong; she plays travel hockey for Nassau and you can tell that she is playing some hockey.”

Senior Elizabeth Wright and sophomore Sydney Rubin should be able to help out Zammit in the defensive zone.

“Elizabeth Wright is really tall and can be tough in front of the net,” said Herzog.

“Sydney Rubin came out for the team last year and was new to the game. She decided to play some summer league, she has come back and is a lot better than she was last year. She was asking me about playing defense so that could be a possibility.”

In goal, senior Callie Urisko (.850 save percentage in 2014-15) has proven that she is tough.

“Callie is our only goalie and I think she is ready for a big senior year,” said Herzog.

“She has got a lot more confidence. I am looking for her to be more vocal to let the defense know what they can help her out with. She is getting better with it; she is coming out and playing the puck more.”

While PHS may be a work in progress this winter, Herzog is confident that his team will give its all every game.

“You show up and if you have enough players, you play the game,” said Herzog.

“That is what we are here to do. That is what I love about our girls, they play hard and have a good time.”
