While the Hun School boys’ basketball team may not tower over the competition this winter, Jon Stone is hoping it can outflank its foes.

“We are a team full of wings, most of our team is 6’3-6’5 so they have all got good size,” said Hun head coach Jon Stone, who guided the Raiders to a 10-13 record last winter.

“The problem is that they are all the same; nobody is taller than me. On my best teams, we have two or three taller than me.”

In Stone’s view, the team’s best chance for success will come to utilizing its speed and perimeter skill.

“I think we will be up tempo and get up and down; we have got the ability to shoot,” said Stone, whose corps of guards includes junior Tyler Washington, senior Desmond Cambridge, junior Lorenzo Spinazzi, junior Justin Cort, senior Austin Hutcherson, sophomore Shamar Florence, and freshman Niels Lane.

In the frontcourt, Hun will be relying on the trio of senior and Scotland native Ewan Lancaster, along with junior Max Gussen and senior Chris Jack to provide some inside punch.

“It is just another year in our school and our country and everything else for Ewan, he is a lot more grounded this year and ready to have a really good season,” said Stone.

“He is very steady so far in terms of his effort and what he has given us; he is consistent. Max and Chris both have the ability to rebound. They give us some size up front as well as putting the ball in the hole with their shooting ability.”

With Hun opening the 2016-17 season at the Haverford School (Pa.) on December 1, Stone is looking for more consistency from his team collectively.

“It has been going pretty good; we are getting there,” said Stone, reflecting on the preseason. “We have got a lot of work to do but we have some nice pieces. I think it is coming together, it is just going to take a little bit of time.”

In order to have a big winter, the Raiders are going to need to be scrappy and efficient.

“I think since we are a little small for our league, a big key is going to be our ability to team rebound and defend people that are bigger than us,” said Stone.

“We have the ability to shoot the ball, we need to get open shots and make them.”
