Horizon Supports Millhill Health Literacy Initiative
The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey has awarded Millhill Child and Family Development Corporation an $11,000 grant in support of its Health Literacy Program. The grant will help provide health literacy education, access to developmental and behavioral health care screenings, as well as public health interventions.
“Millhill is excited to continue our partnership with The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey to bring health and wellness education to our children and families. We especially look forward to collaborating again this year for our 4th Annual Health Fair in September to provide health information to the Trenton community,” said Nicole Cowan, Millhill’s health literacy coordinator.
The grant will help provide youth, families, and caregivers with health literacy training and tools necessary to lead healthy lives. Millhill’s Health Literacy Program aims to promote and build a culture of health among our families while working to eliminate barriers to education and care. Millhill works collaboratively to address health disparities with the Trenton Health Team, Trenton Area Stakeholders, and other organizations to empower and strengthen children and families in Trenton.
Health literacy and barriers to care were identified as a priority health area for Trenton residents, according to the Trenton Health Team’s 2013 and 2016 Community Needs Assessment. In response to this need and with the support of its partners, Millhill recently expanded its Health Literacy initiative across core programs including early education, family support, and counseling services.
Topics at Millhill include proper medicine use, communicating with your doctor, coping with stress, mental illness, addiction, oral health, technology, and community resources and nutrition, among others.
With support from The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, Millhill’s 4th Annual Health Fair will take place on September 29 at 101 Oakland Street in Trenton. The Health Fair is free to residents of Mercer County. In addition, Horizon NJ Health will provide the entertainment, DJ, and health screenings. Millhill is collecting donations of hygienic items to be distributed during the Fair. New donations of everyday essentials can be dropped off at Millhill through September 26.
