With a season of high school soccer under her belt, Nicole Angelini is looking to be more assertive this fall in her sophomore season for the Hun School girls’ soccer team.

“I am a lot more confident; last year, I was kind of timid,” said Angelini. “This year, I wanted to come out and help lead the team and work with the senior captains, Nicole Apuzzi and Kendall Dandridge, who are both great players. I really wanted to play well for them and the rest of the team.”

Last Wednesday against visiting East Brunswick, Angelini took a leading role, lofting a brilliant volley into the back of the net to give Hun a 1-0 midway through the first half.

“We needed some offense and someone to step up and score,” said Angelini. “I just wanted to push forward and take a shot.”

East Brunswick, which entered the game with a 10-2 record, pushed back, scoring two unanswered goals in the second half to pull out a 2-1 victory.

“We played really well in the first half, we came out hard,” said Angelini, reflecting on the setback.

“In the second half, maybe we slowed down little bit but I thought our team was working well together.”

Angelini is determined to work hard at both ends of the field for the Raiders.

“It is my job to help create scoring opportunities,” said Angelini, who contributed a goal to help Hun defeat the Hill School (Pa.) 3-1 last Friday.

“But also when the other team gets counterattacks, I need to get back and help win the ball back and play it up to the forwards so they can get some more opportunities.”

With Hun heading into the stretch drive of its Mid-Atlantic Prep League (MAPL) campaign by playing at Lawrenceville on October 21 and the state Prep A tourney around the corner, Angelini believes the squad has the opportunity to do some big things.

“We are always playing with teams, no matter how good they are,” said Angelini.

“We possess the ball and we always fight for every single ball. We started off the season well and I think we are going to finish the season well.”
