McCarter Theatre Center, in partnership with Princeton University’s Humanities Council and co-produced by Jill Newman Productions, presents two-time Grammy Award winner Meshell Ndegeocello in No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin, a theatrical live rendition of her 2024 album, on Saturday, February 15 at 7:30 p.m.

Baldwin was a prolific writer of essays, novels, plays, and poetry; and an activist who spoke out about Black oppression. This year marks the centennial of Baldwin’s birth, which is celebrated by the release of one of multi-instrumentalist/singer/songwriter/producer Meshell Ndegeocello’s No More Water: The Gospel Of James Baldwin.

Ndegeocello is known for her sojourns into soul, R&B, jazz, hip-hop, rock, all bound by the search for love, justice, respect, and resolution. Those sonic investigations have defied and redefined the expectations for women, for queer artists, and for black music for over 30 years. She remains one of the few women who write the music, sing the songs, and lead the band.

A bass player above all else, she has played alongside the Rolling Stones, Madonna, Alanis Morrisette, James Blood Ulmer, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Tony Allen, John Medeski, Billy Preston, and Chaka Khan.
