University Commissions Maya Lin For Installation at Lewis Center

By Anne Levin

Artist Maya Lin has been commissioned by Princeton University to create an installation for a section of the landscape at the new Lewis Center for the Arts. Details have yet to emerge about the substance, size, and scale of the work, which will “provide a landmark for visitors to campus and an invigorated outdoor setting for students to stage ad hoc performances and enjoy plein air classes,” according to a release from the University.

Known for her Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, which she designed while still an undergraduate at Yale, Ms. Lin was the 2016 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Her work is described as sculpture and “land art,” and has been part of other memorials as well as public and private buildings, landscapes, architectural work, and intimate studio artworks. Environmental concerns are a major part of her work.

Ms. Lin owns and operates Maya Lin Studio in New York. She was awarded bachelor of arts and master of architecture degrees from Yale. She currently serves on the boards of the Bloomberg Foundation, the What is Missing? Foundation, and the Museum of Chinese in America. Ms. Lin is a former member of the Yale Corporation, Natural Resources Defense Council, and the Energy Foundation. She lives in New York City and is represented by the Pace Gallery.

The University will celebrate the opening of the Lewis Center complex with an arts festival October 5-8. Open to the public, it will include dozens of concerts, plays, readings, dance performances, art exhibitions, screenings, and more, at venues not only at the Lewis Center but across the campus. Most will be free. Visit arts.princeton.edu.
