At their meeting on Monday evening, Princeton Township Committee members approved the introduction of an ordinance that will fine-tune the existing law regarding canine misbehavior. Instead of the current law, which covers the “gamut” of infractions “from tearing up bushes to biting people,” as Township Attorney Edwin Schmierer described it, the new law would distinguish between inappropriate behavior and biting incidents, with a $250 fine for the first biting offense, and $500 for the second. A $75 fine would be imposed for all other offenses. A public hearing on the ordinance will be held on Monday, May 18.

The official naming of Phyllis L. Marchand Plaza, in honor of the Township’s longest-serving mayor, will take place on Wednesday, May 13, from 4 to 5 p.m., in the area in front of Municipal building. The proclamation announcing the event, read by Mayor Bernie Miller, cited Ms. Marchand’s attendance at an “unprecedented number of meetings,” and the “respect and affection” with which the people of Princeton regard her. The May 13 celebration will continue at the Nassau Inn after the free ceremonies at the plaza, with a cash bar, “heavy hors d’oeuvres,” and a “light roasting” of the former Mayor. Cyclists and pedestrians will be acknowledged on Sunday, May 17, which has been designated “Be Green and Be Seen” Day by a joint Township and Borough proclamation. A bike tour will leave Hinds Plaza (at the Princeton Public Library) at 12:30 p.m. for a trip that will include visits to local school gardens. A rally at the plaza will follow, from 2 to 4 p.m. As a result of efforts by the joint Borough/Township Sidewalk and Bike Advisory Committee, more walking and biking paths are being created throughout the community, with the goal of establishing a network of routes that will provide convenient access to key destinations.
Drivers who routinely pass the Princeton Charter School and Princeton Friends School may want to take note of the introduction of an ordinance on Monday evening that would create 25 mile per hour speed zones at those schools. The public hearing for this ordinance will also be on May 18.
