Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker will deliver the keynote address at the 20th Anniversary Gala Celebration of Princeton Project 55 at the Westin Princeton on Thursday, May 27, at 6 p.m. Project 55 was created by members of Princeton University’s Class of 1955, who launched the organization in 1990, at the urging of classmate Ralph Nader. Its Public Interest Program has connected over 1,700 graduates, including First Lady Michelle Obama, with jobs in nonprofit organizations. Over 300 alums are expected to attend the event.

Corner House, Princeton High School, and the Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad, with the cooperation of the Borough and Township police departments and the fire department, will stage a mock drunk-driving head-on crash on Walnut Lane between John Witherspoon Middle School and Princeton High School on Wednesday, May 26, at approximately 9 a.m. The purpose of this re-enactment is to graphically illustrate the dangers of drinking and driving. The scenario will include an injured student being air-lifted by helicopter, the “arrest” of the drunk driver, and removal by hearse of the “fatality.” Similar events held in the past have proved to be very powerful lessons about how lives can change in a matter of seconds.

Mercer Alliance to End Homelessness Executive Director Herb Levine will lead a discussion in the Community Room of the Princeton Public Library on Tuesday, May 25, at 7 p.m. The numbers of Mercer County homeless in 2009 range from an actual one-day count of 1,067 adults and children to an estimated 3,808. Mr. Levine will describe the goals, principles, and steps that his organization has outlined to deal with this problem.
