Sparked by Bruising Defensive Effort, Hun Football Blanks Penn Charter 19-0

In the early stages of its game last Saturday against Philadelphia-area power Penn Charter, the Hun School football was starting to get some bad feelings of deja vu.

After having lost three straight times to the Quakers, Hun got off to a shaky start on the defensive side of the ball. In its first possession of the contest, Penn Charter drove into Hun territory to put the Raiders on their heels.

Hun head coach Dave Dudeck realized that his club had to make some defensive adjustments on the fly to keep things from getting ugly.

“We made a change in what we were doing on defense,” said Dudeck. “We stiffened up after that. The rest of the day, we got better and better.”

The Hun defense ended up producing one of its better performances in years as the Raiders blanked Penn Charter 19-0. On the day, Hun held the Quakers to 125 yards total offense, yielding just 24 in the second half.

In reflecting on the impressive victory, Dudeck said the win was definitely a team effort.

“I think the fact that we held Penn Charter to zero points is something we can be very proud of,” said Dudeck, whose club improved to 3-0 with the win.

“A lot of guys made plays at different points. Different kids are stepping up which is fun. We have a lot of young kids playing and they are getting confident as they get experience.”

Senior standout Jory Johnson showed plenty of confidence as he starred on both sides of the ball, recording a team-high eight tackles and making three receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown.

“Jory Johnson made a ton of tackles,” said Dudeck. “His touchdown catch in the back of the end zone was really spectacular.”

The defense was keyed by some spectacular play by rugged lineman Tyler Stockton and defensive back Nick Williams who returned an interception 47 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

“It all starts with Tyler Stockton in the middle at nose guard, he’s such a force,” asserted Dudeck. “Nick Williams made a great play on that interception to seal the game and he got a huge block from Andrew Felker on the return.”

Hun excelled on special teams as senior kicker Scott Demler booted two field goals and punted well.

“Scott Demler had a huge game,” said Dudeck of the 5’11, 190-pound Demler whose strong leg has caught the eye of several Division I schools.

“He kicks the ball early in the game and Brendan [Dudeck] knocks it out at the one. They get pinned and Scott then kicks a field goal on our next possession.”

Hun quarterback Matthew Miller capably guided the offense, hitting on 7-of-20 passes for 68 yards and adding 66 yards rushing.

“Matthew Miller continues to make big plays with his arm and feet,” added Dudeck. “He didn’t have the best passing game but he still had some big throws for us.”

Dudeck likes the way his team is taking care of business week to week. “We tell them all the time that the biggest thing is to keep getting better each week,” said Dudeck, whose team hosts Lawrenceville on October 6.

“If we do that, things will be fine. We have a big rivalry game with Lawrenceville. We know they haven’t had the best start but you have to throw the records out the window when we play them.”

Hun proved that notion last Saturday as it disregarded its bad record against Penn Charter in stuffing the Quakers.
