Oh, for a good night’s sleep! The word is out that many Americans are sleep-deprived. Whether from the stress of our high tech society and always being connected, too much caffeine, or a physical problem, too little sleep can ultimately become a health issue. Sometimes, the culprit can be a poor or old mattress.
Princeton Mattress wants to fix that for you. Recently relocated from Witherspoon Street to the Princeton Shopping Center, it offers a wide range of mattresses, many at discounted prices.
“We needed more space, and we also wanted more convenient parking,” explains owner Jeff Bonham, who has a lengthy background in the mattress business. “I ran a mattress chain for 16 years, and then my family and I decided to open our own store. We wanted to be in Princeton. There were no other mattress stores here, and we knew that Princeton was a good location, a thriving town.”
After opening on Witherspoon Street in 2006, the store became so popular it outgrew the space. Now, with 3600 square feet in the Shopping Center — located between Smith’s Ace Hardware and Camillo’s Cafe — it offers a spacious, attractive showroom in which to display its extensive selection of mattresses, pillows, and beds.
Same Staff
“We also have the same staff, Janeen, the manager, and Jim, our sales professional, who have been with us since the beginning,” notes Mr. Bonham.
Simmons Beauty Rest, Tempur-Pedic, Sealy PosturePedic, Talalay Latex, and other value brands are available in all sizes from twin to king, and there are also children’s mattresses and beds.
“Tempur-Pedic is the biggest name in mattresses today and the fastest-growing,” reports manager Janeen Albertson. “It has temperature-sensitive material that molds to the body. And no coils. It offers excellent support and perfect spinal alignment.
“People sleep better on it,” she continues. “It conforms to the body and eliminates pressure and motion when sleeping. You stay in one position. It has been around for 10 years, but in the last couple of years, it has come out with more models. We have eight different Tempur-Pedic models.”

Advances in mattress technology continue to develop, especially recently, notes Ms. Albertson. “There have been more improvements in mattresses in the last nine years than in the previous 109 because of memory foam. Since it reduces pressure and motion — the biggest problems for sleeping — it helps provide a better night’s sleep. Mattresses have changed dramatically.”
Good Health
Mattresses generally last eight to 10 years, she adds, and the Tempur-Pedic is guaranteed for 20 years.
“Sleep is a part of good health,” continues Ms. Albertson. “Our country hasn’t always taken mattresses and pillows seriously. But the quality of sleep is very important for good health.”
The right pillow is another factor in sleeping well, she adds. “Pillows are very important. You can’t get a good night’s sleep without a good pillow. There are three kinds of pillows: goosedown, latex, and memory foam. And there are all combinations of shapes, sizes, heights, and firmness. We have at least 12 different kinds of shapes and firmness.”
Both Mr. Bonham and Ms. Albertson have been very encouraged with their new location. “We are very happy here at the Shopping Center, and all of our customers are very pleased too.”
Quick Snooze
Service is a priority at Princeton Mattress, and customers are welcome to take their time in making a selection. It is not unusual to see a visitor curled up on a mattress, trying it out — and maybe even indulging in a quick snooze!
In addition to the discounted prices, sales are frequent at the store, and delivery is free. As another service, customers’ old mattresses will be taken away without charge, if they wish.
“I enjoy meeting the customers,” says Ms. Albertson. “There are many regulars who come in and have been referred by previous clients. The happiest times are when they come in and say how well they’ve been sleeping on one of our mattresses. And it is so nice when they take time to tell us.”
