Yes We CAN!, the Princeton-based group that seeks to alleviate hunger, will hold a food drive at the Pennington Market on Saturday, September 12, from 11 a.m to 3:30 p.m. Shoppers entering the market will be asked to purchase fresh produce or cans and boxes of food to donate when they are finished shopping. The food will be turned over to the Crisis Ministry of Princeton and Trenton to restock its food pantries, which each month serve over 3,000 people, including 1,000 children. The next Yes We CAN! food drive is scheduled for September 20 at the ShopRite in Ewing. The Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund (LALDEF) and the Princeton Public Library, with support from a grant from the IOLTA Fund of the Bar of New Jersey, will offer a free citizenship workshop on Saturday, September 19, from 2 to 5 p.m. Several local immigration attorneys will donate their time to review citizenship applications, and trained bilingual volunteers will help applicants with the completion of the N400 naturalization form. The Master Gardeners of Mercer County will host its seventh annual Insect Festival on Saturday, September 12, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Mercer Educatioonal Gardens, 431A Federal City Road, Pennington, adjacent to the Mercer County Equestrian Center. Children’s events will include a puppet show, Geocaching, music, bee dances, and hay rides. Adults can learn about beneficial insects, beekeeping, and composting. Mercer County Horticulturist Barbara J. Bromley will be on hand for a Q & A session about home gardening. The Master Gardeners of Mercer County is a volunteer educational outreach program under the Rutgers Cooperative Extension. For more information see www.mgofmc.org.

Mercer County senior citizens have one last opportunity to receive fresh produce vouchers that will enable them to purchase locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables at participating farm stands when representatives from the Mercer County Nutrition Office distribute the vouchers on Friday, September 11, between 12 and 4 p.m. at the Mercer County Extension Service, 930 Spruce Street, Lawrence. Eligible senior citizens will receive coupons to redeem $30 in fresh produce at various vendor sites throughout the county. Vouchers will be in $5 denominations and are valid until November 30, 2009. To receive vouchers, single person income must be below $20,036; a couple’s income must be below $26,599 per year. Documentation is required for certification. The Princeton Regional Health Department and Animal Control are sponsoring a free rabies clinic on Saturday, September 19, from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Community Park Pool, 400 Witherspoon Street. All dogs and cats are welcome. Dogs must be on leashes and under control, and cats must be in carriers or pillowcases. Call (609) 497-7608 for more information.
