“GROWING SIDEWAYS: SCHOOL DAYS”: Works by Catalina Schliebener will be on view September 7 through December 9 at the Anne Reid ’72 Gallery at Princeton Day School. A public reception is planned for September 15 from 5 to 7 p.m.

A new exhibit, “Growing Sideways: School Days,” featuring work by Catalina Schliebener, opens at Princeton Day School on September 7, with a planned public reception at the Anne Reid ’72 Gallery on Thursday, September 15 from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibit will be on view through December 9.

Schliebener is a Chilean-born, Brooklyn-based artist who works in varying formats that include collage, large-scale mural, and multi-media installation. They assemble playful and fluid strands of collage that journey along lengths of gallery wall, interacting with hand-drawn graphite lines and enlarged vinyl forms. Specific objects that have been altered or adjusted in curious and alluring ways rest in various places around the gallery – drawing elements from the walls into the third dimension.

The Robert Beck exhibit that opened July 30 at the James A. Michener Art Museum is titled “It’s Personal.” As Beck explains, “The majority of my paintings are done directly from the subject in one sitting. They depict where I am, what catches my interest, and what it feels like to be there .… The reason why I was drawn to a subject became part of the image. It got very personal.”

I feel the same way whether I’m writing about exhibits or books or films, or any other subject in the arts, and it’s why I think of these weekly adventures as columns, even though they’ve been categorized as “reviews” ever since I began writing them some 17 years ago.

Movie Mindset

In Beck’s stormy, mood-drenched street scene Love’s Notions and Novelties you can almost hear the gale-force wind and the water rushing in the gutter. Immediately I’m flashbacking through a stream of cinematic imagery, from the heavy-rain-with-gunshots-night of The Big Sleep, swept with film noir headlights gleaming on wet pavement, to a 21st-century television series like AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire, where a father braves hurricane winds and lightning on a Christmas quest to buy Cabbage Patch Kids for his children.

The Arts Council of Princeton (ACP) has announced acclaimed fine art photographer Robin Resch as its winter 2021 Anne Reeves Artist-in-Residence. During her residency, Resch will continue work locally on her series, aptly named Taking Pause, in response to the challenges of this year and the COVID-19 pandemic. The completed portraits will be on display in Princeton’s Dohm Alley from April to October 2021.

Taking Pause is a documentary, collaborative portrait project that asks people to reflect on what in their lives feels most essential. With what do we identify and connect most deeply? What truly matters to us and why?

Resch documents each participant with two distinct portraits: one of their physical self, and an accompanying portrait of their reflective self through what they choose to share. Each participant is then asked to tell the story behind their selection.
