Teen Travel Camp Extended; Adult Swimmers Get Choices

Ellen Gilbert

“Travel Camp — 2 additional weeks added!” exclaims the Princeton Recreation Department’s website in large, red letters.

“We had so many people begging us to extend teen travel camp that we did it,” said Recreation Department Executive Director Jack Roberts.

Not only did they do it, they did it at a reduced rate.

How? By “bringing in additional funds to offset the cost,” according to Program Supervisor Ben Stentz.

The current week (August 3 to August 7) marks the first extra week of Teen Travel Camp. Those interested in participating in the next and last extra week (August 10 to August 14) should contact Danny Page at (609) 921-9480 or dpage1022@yahoo.com. “We’re almost full with sign-ups already,” reported Mr. Roberts. “It’s just amazing.”

Geared for middle schoolers, Travel Camp was originally scheduled to run for just six weeks. “The kids love it,” said Mr. Stentz, “and it really helps working parents. We look at it as a service to the community.”

Recreation Department camps were already “the cheapest” around, according to Mr. Roberts. Anticipating family “staycations” during this economically challenged summer, the department had already extended its day camp two extra weeks from the very beginning.

“Day camp numbers have been great,” reported Mr. Stentz. “They have a million different activities going on, and two more weeks to go.”

Other midsummer Recreation Department innovations include the addition of lap-swimming times in designated lanes for both senior and non-senior adult swimmers, from 10 a.m. to noon. “We snuck in another lane and it’s worked out pretty well,” said Mr. Roberts. “Next year we’ll look at this more carefully and figure out a better system.”
