Representatives from the Mercer County Nutrition Office will offer fresh produce checks for senior citizens on Friday, August 27, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Extension Services Building located at the Trenton Farmers Market, 930 Spruce Street, Lawrence. Eligible senior citizens will receive checks to redeem $20 in fresh produce at various vendor sites throughout the county. Vouchers will be distributed in two $10 denominations and are valid until November 30. To be eligible for the checks, single person income must be below $20,036, and a couple’s income must be below $26,599 per year. Documentation is required for certification and the income criteria must be met to be eligible to receive the checks. The Delaware & Raritan Canal Watch will hold a free history tour by bicycle along the canal on Saturday, September 4. Cyclists will meet 10 a.m. at the canal’s Griggstown parking lot along the Griggstown Causeway in Franklin Township. Bob Barth will conduct the ride, which will stop at historic villages and canal structures, such as locks and swing bridges. He will explain why the D&R was one of the most successful canals in the United States. Helmets are required and cyclists are advised to bring water and a snack for the ride, which will last approximately three hours. A wireless public safety broadband network supporting local first responders’ communications will be created in New Jersey as a result of an allocation of $39,368,152 in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The money will support the establishment of an interoperable 700 MHz public safety wireless network, improving coordination between 51 agencies and 30,000 users. “This is another example of New Jersey benefitting from investments we made when we enacted the Economic Recovery Act,” said Congressman Rush Holt (D-12). “This funding addresses the critical need — identified by the 9/11 Commission — for our first responders to communicate and coordinate with each other during emergencies. This funding will create jobs to set up this network and help keep our communities safe.”
