Second Annual Student Art Contest Announced by Princeton Magazine

When Princeton Magazine’s holiday issue arrives in mailboxes and on newsstands in a few months, the cover will feature the work of a budding local artist. The identity of that talented individual will be determined after Friday, October 7 at noon, which is the deadline for the Second Annual Princeton Magazine Student Art Contest. Anyone from New Jersey and Pennsylvania schools in grades 3-12 is invited to submit a piece of original art for the holiday issue.

The winner will have his or her artwork featured on the magazine’s cover, and will also receive a cash prize. The two runners up will be recognized with smaller cash awards, and will be featured in the “Art Scene” column of the magazine’s November issue.

Initiated last year, the contest drew an enthusiastic response and some 100 entries. The winner, Riverside Elementary School fifth grader Celia Silver, used her prize money to start a college fund. Her acrylic and watercolor on canvas was titled Nassau Hall in Winter. Laura Bussemaker, also from Riverside, was a runner-up with Winter Winner, while Arya Sasne, a student at Maurice Hawk Elementary School, won her prize for Palmer Square.

The entries for this year’s contest, which again follow a Wintertime in Princeton theme, have already started arriving at the magazine’s offices. “The first one we received was a digital of skaters on Carnegie Lake,” said editor Lynn Adams Smith. “Several others have been digital media as well, and that’s very exciting. We definitely want to make this an annual contest.”

The images must be vertical rather than horizontal, and should have room for the magazine’s logo at the top. No pencil drawings can be considered. Art can be in two-dimensional format or as an electronic file. Photographic submissions must be provided as digital files, and digital files must be saved as psd, pdf, jpg, tiff or eps formats only. They should be a minimum resolution of 300 dpi at final size (8.5” by 11”).

Original drawings or paintings should be mailed to Princeton Magazine at 305 Witherspoon Street, Princeton, NJ 08542, delivered flat in a protective sleeve or envelope; or e-mailed to editor@princetonmagazine.com. Do not submit framed art. Anything that needs to be returned must be supplied with return packaging and postage.
