Sophomore Hummer Leads Balanced Attack as Tiger Men’s Basketball Holds Off St. Joe’s

Ian Hummer got into a groove early on last Sunday as the Princeton University men’s basketball team hosted Saint Joseph’s.

The sophomore forward hit all five of his first half shots to help Princeton jump out to a 45-27 halftime lead.

“It always starts out that if I am posting up and if I see that I can go 1-on-1 then I am going to try to take advantage of it as best I can,” said the 6‘7, 226-pound Hummer, a native of Vienna, Va.

The prospect of hosting winless Rider University last Sunday didn’t figure to get the blood racing for the Princeton University women’s basketball team.

After all, the Tigers came into the contest at 4-2 with wins over Southern Cal and previously undefeated Delaware and a narrow loss to No. 22 Vanderbilt in the last 10 days. Moreover, the Tigers has cruised to an 83-57 win at Rider last season.

But junior back-up guard Laura Johnson and her fellow reserves were plenty excited for the matchup with the Broncs.

Mucha, Fellow Frosh Rising to the Occasion, Giving Princeton Women’s Ice Hockey a Lift

Olivia Mucha has struggled to develop consistency as she has gone through her first few months with the Princeton University women’s ice hockey team.

“The toughest thing is the strength of everyone; every team is deep,” said 5’5 freshman forward Mucha, a native of West Chester, Pa. who starred at The Hotchkiss School before coming to Princeton.

“You are always challenged; you never have a shift off. It’s tough getting used to playing every shift 100 percent and knowing that it could or could not go your way and then keeping a good attitude throughout the whole game.”

Veteran Ryan Taking Helm of PDS Girls’ Hoops; Plans to Use Experience to Keep Panthers Rolling

From the mid-1970s to 1994, Mika Ryan immersed herself in the world of women’s college basketball.

After starring at the University of North Carolina, Ryan became an assistant coach for the University of Virginia in 1977. She then moved north to New Jersey, where she served as an assistant at Rider before taking the helm of The College of New Jersey.

Ryan led the Lions to a 147-86 record in nine seasons as a head coach. But in 1994, with three young daughters at home, Ryan left coaching to focus on family matters.

With Hun’s Campellone Spearheading Defense, Match Fit Chelsea U16 Makes Super Y Semis

While Nicole Campellone was fired up to be competing in the Super Y 2010 North American finals in Tampa, Fla. last month for the Match Fit Chelsea girls’ U16 travel soccer team, she was a little nervous as the competition approached.

“We were definitely excited because we didn’t make it into nationals last year,” said Campellone, a junior standout for the Hun School girls’ soccer team.

“We were apprehensive going into it; we were not sure of what to expect. We knew that we were going to be playing good teams and that we had to show up and compete hard if were going to make it to the semis and the finals.”
