Representative Rush Holt (D-12) was named Chair of the House Select Intelligence Oversight Panel, the post he held in the 110th Congress. The panel helps write budgets for, and provides oversight of the U.S. intelligence community. Speaker Nancy Pelosi also announced that Holt will return to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. This year, at the request of Ms. Pelosi, Mr. Holt also serves as a member of the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, in which he helps make decisions about Democratic members’ committee assignments as well as assisting in setting the Democratic Caucus’s policy agenda. Mr. Holt is also serving as Regional Whip.

Paul Robeson Place will be closed between Chambers Street and Witherspoon Street from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Wednesday, February 11 to Tuesday, February 17. A detour route will be posted using Chambers, Hulfish, and Witherspoon Streets. Police will be stationed at each end of the detour for traffic control. Only those who park at the Hulfish Street Garage’s upper level, will be allowed through the detour at Chambers Street and Paul Robeson Place. Garage users are asked to have their access card ready to show the attendant or police officer stationed at the corner and to use caution when exiting the Hulfish Street garage between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Construction workers will be in the street along with flagmen directing garage parkers out to Witherspoon Street. Access to lower level parking remains the same. There will be a Special Meeting of the Princeton Regional Board of Education on Tuesday, February 17, at 6:30 p.m., at the Valley Road Building. The meeting is open to the public, and action will be taken.

The Mercer County Park Commission is hosting biweekly “Free Firewood Fridays” beginning February 13, giving county residents the opportunity to pick up free firewood collected from various County parks. The offer extends only to Mercer County residents (park rangers will be checking IDs), and is intended just for household use. The program is on a first-come, first-served basis, and will continue while the supply lasts. Pick-up of firewood, which is cut to fireplace-burning size but not split, will be on alternate Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon, and 4 to 7 p.m., with Park Commission staff assisting with loading only during the morning collection. Firewood pick-up is located at Mercer County Park, West Windsor, off the main road near the turn-off for the skating rink. Electronic message boards will provide directions to the exact location.

The Princeton Community Democratic Organization (PCDO) is sponsoring a workshop, “Princeton Wants You!” for those interested in learning more about how to get involved in local government, either by serving in an appointed capacity on one of the organization’s boards and commissions, or by running for elected office. The workshop will be held on Saturday, February 14, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., in the Princeton Public Library’s second floor conference room.
