Newly-elected Mayor Chad Goerner began Monday evening’s Township Committee meeting by calling for a moment of silence to remember the victims of the Arizona shooting rampage on Saturday. “I’m sure they’ll be in our thoughts as the weeks go on,” he observed.
A proposal to make the Township’s five-member Citizens’ Finance Advisory Committee a permanent entity was unanimously passed at the meeting. Attorney Ed Schmierer noted that Township government frequently “tapped into the committee,” which was founded in 2007, for expert financial advice.
Reiterating an announcement he made at last Sunday’s Reorganization Meeting, Mr. Goerner described a “voluntary payment agreement” under which Princeton University will pay the Township $500,000 in 2011 as a result of “fair share” negotiations. The committee adopted a slightly revised version of the agreement, with new wording suggested by Mr. Goerner and committeeman Bernie Miller to the effect that “the University and the Township further agree to continue discussions during 2011 with the goal of reaching a multi-year agreement or an agreement for 2012, depending on the outcome of consolidation studies.”
The Consolidation Commission’s newly released “baseline report” is available at the website www.cgr.org/princeton, or in hard copy at the Township Clerk’s office. The report, which is entitled “Municipal Services and Financial Overview,” provides a review of the Borough and Township’s budgets, services, and related information, and “will serve as the basis for an exploration of options over the coming months.” A public forum to discuss the baseline report and solicit community feedback will be held on Wednesday, January 26, at 7:30 p.m. at the John Witherspoon Middle School auditorium.
The Commission will hold its next monthly meeting on Wednesday, January 19, at 7 p.m. at the Township Municipal Complex. The meeting will convene in the Community Room and is open to the public.
Deputy Mayor and Recreation Department Liaison Sue Nemeth announced that there will be a meeting to discuss the Community Park Pool on Thursday, January 13, at 5 p.m. It will include Recreation Department representatives, as well as members of Township Committee and Borough Council.
Mr. Miller closed the public portion of the meeting with reassurances that the Public Works and Police Departments were “anticipating and prepared for” the second major storm of the season, which was due to begin Tuesday evening.
