The Historical Society of Princeton is currently working on a research project on the artist Rex Goreleigh (1902-1986). Goreleigh lived in Princeton for nearly forty years, initially working as director of Princeton Group Arts (an attempt to bridge racial barriers through the arts), and then operating his Studio-on-the-Canal. During his lifetime, he was featured in numerous one-man and group exhibitions locally and nationally. Goreleigh was particularly noted for his paintings of migrant farm workers in central New Jersey. Beginning February 1, Borough garbage collection will change to once a week pick-up. In the Eastern District of the Borough (east of Witherspoon Street for areas north of Nassau Street, and east of Washington Road for areas south of Nassau Street) garbage will be collected on Thursdays. Collection day will be Tuesday for the Western District (west of Witherspoon Street for ares north of Nassau Street, and west of Washington Road for areas south of Nassau Street, including Witherspoon Street, Witherspoon Lane, and Shirley Court). If the scheduled day falls on New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, or Christmas Day, garbage will be picked up on the following Friday. Recycling collection will not be affected. Inquiries regarding waste collection may be directed to the Borough Engineering Department at (609) 497-7634.
The Arts Council of Princeton will partner with Kidsbridge Tolerance Museum to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. with an afternoon of art activities for kids on January 19, between 2 and 5 p.m., at the Paul Robeson Center for the Arts located at 102 Witherspoon Street.
The Princeton Community Democratic Organization (PCDO) will hold its annual meeting and pot luck supper on Sunday, January 18, at 6 p.m., at the Suzanne Patterson Center. Election of the PCDO Executive Board for 2009 will follow at 7 p.m. Those who are planning to attend the pot luck supper are asked to bring a main dish, salad, appetizer, or dessert; bread and beverages will be provided. Representative Rush Holt (D-12) will host a telephone town hall meeting with Central New Jersey residents on Thursday, January 15, at 7 p.m. The one-hour meeting will take place five days before the inauguration of Barack Obama, and will provide participants an opportunity to share views on the challenges facing New Jersey and the country, including the economy, energy, retirement security, health care, and anything else that may be on their minds. Planned Parenthood will commemorate the 36th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion across the United States, with the fourth annual “Honk and Wave” on Saturday, January 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants will meet at Monument Park, at the intersection of Routes 206 and 27.
