The Princeton Regional Health Commission and Health Officer David Henry are to be commended for their efforts to inform residents on what to do in the case of an environmental or man-made disaster (Town Topics, July 1). Completing the Community Preparedness Survey by Princeton residents, either in hard copy or online, is an important first step.
As a member of the June 23 focus group that discussed the preparedness issue, it was apparent to me that some community groups have addressed the topic while others have not. All agreed that Princeton residents are enthusiastic volunteers and would respond in an emergency if they were aware of their responsibilities in emergency prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. The general consensus was that emergency preparedness should be brought under a single coordinated umbrella and that individuals should be identified who have had Community Emergency Response Team training who in turn could train and guide residents.
As one focus group participant noted, “Emergency preparedness is not a happy subject and people don’t want to think about it.” This is true, but, just like carrying an umbrella in case of rain, if residents are prepared and trained to respond in an emergency, hopefully they won’t need to do so.

During the past several weeks, Princeton HealthCare System has celebrated and said “thank you” to the community’s health care providers — physicians, nurses, and members of the region’s emergency medical squads — for their remarkable commitment and talents.
Now, PHCS would like to say thank you to the various retailers and businesses that showed their appreciation with generous gifts that were given away as door prizes during the appreciation festivities.
