Princeton University student Yudai Chiba has been chosen to participate in the Japan-America Student Conference (JASC), the world’s longest running student-led exchange program between the two countries. Yudai will join a group of 72 college students, half from Japan and half from the U.S., traveling around Japan from July 24 to August 21. They will participate in roundtable discussions, research presentations, and field trips that include a visit to the United States Naval Base in Yokosuka, and celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Hakodate port opening to foreigners. JASC’s main mission is to promote peace through mutual understanding, friendship, and trust between the United States and Japan. The annual 30-day exchange that alternates between the U.S. and Japan is also designed to give students opportunities to grow in leadership, research, diplomacy, and networking. The Institute for Advanced Study has appointed William H. Sewell Jr., Frank P. Hixon Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Political Science and History at the University of Chicago, to its Board of Trustees, effective July 1. A scholar who has focused on the relationship between history and social theory, Mr. Sewell was nominated by the Institute’s School of Social Science. He succeeds Peter Galison, Joseph Pellegrino University Professor in the Department of the History of Science at Harvard University, who served for the last five years.
