The Spirit of Princeton invites the community to the 12th annual Independence Day fireworks on Thursday, July 1, at 9 p.m., at the fields next to the Princeton University Stadium along Western Way. The site will open at 7 p.m. for picnics and socializing; attendance is free. The fireworks will take place rain or shine; only lightning will cancel the show. No alcoholic beverages are allowed at the site, and smoking is not permitted because of the new artificial turf. The site can be accessed by foot while parking is available in University Lot 21 below the fields off Faculty Road, as well as in the University parking garage on Prospect Street. The Spirit of Princeton is a non-profit organization dedicated to “bringing the community together” through a variety of civic events, including the fireworks, the Memorial Day Parade, the Flag Day celebration, and the Veteran’s Day ceremony. Area residents are invited to attend a ground-breaking ceremony for the Mountain Lakes rehabilitation project on Tuesday, July 6, at 3 p.m. Water will begin to be drained — and fish removed for relocation in Lake Carnegie — on the following day. Actual work on the project will begin Monday, July 12.
New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) and Mercer County are seeking feedback on a countywide plan for improving bicycle facilities. An open-house meeting will be held at the headquarters branch of the Mercer County Library on Darrah Lane in Lawrence Township on Wednesday, July 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. to offer the public an opportunity to learn about what makes a roadway compatible for bicycles, and to provide feedback on how to select locations to make improvements. The NJDOT has developed a bicycle master plan for state highways and has funded plans for several Mercer municipalities through its Local Planning Assistance program. Mercer is the first New Jersey county for which NJDOT has funded a countywide plan. The DVRPC “bikeability” map is at www.dvrpc.org/bikemercer.
