The 2009 Mercer County Teen Arts Festival will be held on Friday, May 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Mercer County Community College in West Windsor. Approximately 750 students, including students from 13 Mercer County middle schools and high schools, will participate. Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes is scheduled to speak at noon in the outdoor quad at the College on Old Trenton Road. The festival, which will move to the gymnasium in the event of rain, is not a competition but an opportunity for young artists to display and perform their individual or group works of art. Each student is required to participate in performance seminars, classes, and workshops in art, media arts, dance, drama, theatre, vocal and instrumental music, film, visual arts, or creative writing. The public will be able to view art pieces on display outside the gallery on the second floor of the Communications Building.

The deadline to apply for a job with ACES, the new Mercer County summer employment program that offers paid jobs and life skills training, is this Friday, May 15. Young adults between the ages of 17 and 25 who are interested in employment should call the Mercer County One-Stop Career Center at (609) 989-6523.

The Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad will be hosting riders from the National EMS Memorial Bike Ride on Sunday morning, May 17, the first day of EMS Week. Riders will be arriving at the Squad’s headquarters at 237 North Harrison Street between 8:30 and 9 a.m. after completing a 24-mile leg on their 600-mile trip from New York to Virginia. The Princeton HealthCare System is offering free stroke risk assessments and screenings on Sunday, May 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Mt. Olivet Baptist church in Hightstown, and Sunday, May 31, at Mt. Pisgah AME Church in Princeton. Participants will have the opportunity to review their results and develop an action plan to reduce their risk for stroke. The next meeting of the Princeton Community Democratic Organization (PCDO), on Sunday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m., will focus on health care reform. The program, “Is this any way for an advanced Western society to treat its people?” will be held at the Suzanne Patterson Center.

U.S. Representative Rush Holt (D-12) will host a telephone town hall meeting with Central New Jersey residents on Monday, May 18, at 7:40 p.m. Participants are encouraged to share their views on the economy, energy, retirement security, health care, and other challenges facing New Jersey and the country.
