Mark Kovler has worn out lacrosse nets honing his left-handed shot which resembles a howitzer.
So the senior midfielder for the Princeton University men’s lacrosse team was thrilled to get some extra shooting practice last week as the Tigers got ready to host Massachusetts in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
Sporting a blue blazer and rep tie, Casey Rahn looked dapper as he mixed with the crowd outside Class of 1952 Stadium last Sunday evening.
But the former Princeton High star athlete didn’t feel too sharp considering that his Massachusetts’ men’s lacrosse team had fallen 10-7 to fourth-seeded Princeton an hour earlier in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
“I am a little disappointed about today,” said Rahn, a sophomore longstick midfielder for ECAC champion UMass. “But the guys fought hard.”
The wind was howling across Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. as the Princeton University men’s lightweight crew competed in the Eastern Sprints last Sunday.
“There were tough conditions with winds of 30 m.p.h.,” said Princeton lightweight head coach Greg Hughes.
“It was intense. One of the tough things about our sport is that it is outside and you can run into things you can’t prepare for. It was a direct cross wind, wrapping around the boats and pushing them around the course.”
But after finishing second in last year’s Easterns and producing its second straight undefeated regular season, Princeton’s top varsity boat was not going to get pushed off its course for post-season glory.
Doug Bryant took on a big challenge for the Princeton High boys’ lacrosse team coming into this spring.
After playing in the midfield in his first two seasons for PHS, the talented junior was moved up to the team’s first attack unit.
Initially, Bryant ran into some heavy traffic as he adjusted to his new role.
Shooting for its fifth straight state Prep B title, the Stuart Country Day lacrosse team was on target in the early going as it hosted Morristown-Beard last Friday in the championship game.
With senior star Elizabeth Bucklee scoring three goals, Stuart jumped out to a 4-2 lead.
But the Tartans sputtered after that as Mo-Beard went on a 4-1 run to take a 6-5 lead by halftime.
