Sparked by Weingrad’s Hard-Hitting Play, Hun Football Routs Lawrenceville 27-9

Colin Weingrad and his teammates on the Hun School football team were determined to get off to a good start against the Lawrenceville School last Saturday and not let up until the final whistle.

A week earlier, Hun built a 14-0 lead over Penn Charter only to lose 21-14.

“After last week, we came to practice and worked real hard,” said Weingrad.

“Everyone came together and we knew we needed to step it up for Lawrenceville; we came out hard.”

Late in the first quarter, Weingrad ran hard as he took a Brendan Dudeck pass and rumbled 12 yards for a touchdown to help Hun take a 7-0 lead.

“We were running the ball a lot and we threw a waggle pass,” recalled Weingrad.

“They weren’t expecting it. The quarterback hit me in the flats and that was it.”

In the second quarter, Dudeck found his younger brother, David, for an 80-yard touchdown pass and Brendan Morgan scored on a nine-yard touchdown run as Hun jumped out to a 21-2 lead by halftime.

With memories of the Penn Charter loss fresh in their mind, the Hun players weren’t cocky about their advantage.

“At half, the coaches reminded us of last week,” said Weingrad. “We didn’t want to repeat that so we came out hard and kept on playing.”

With Weingrad bulling in for a two-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, the Raiders coasted to a 27-9 triumph and improved to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in Mid-Atlantic Prep League (MAPL) play.

In addition to providing some punch to the Hun running attack, the 6’1, 225-pound Weingrad spearheaded the defensive effort from his linebacker spot.

“This week in practice, the coaches prepared us very well,” said Weingrad, a post-graduate who hails from Woodlands, Texas.

“We knew what plays they were running; and on the option, who gets the pitch man, who gets the quarterback. We hit them in the mouth.”

Weingrad is happy that he is getting the chance to play at Hun. “I had a buddy from my team [Travis Keating] who came up here last year and is now at Navy,” said Weingrad.

“He told me about it; it is a good opportunity. I talked to Coach Dudeck and he wanted me up here. I love the players; I love the family atmosphere. It has been real fun.”

Hun head coach Dudeck loves having Weingrad on his team. “Colin is a player,” said Dudeck.

“I told him the way he blocked and ran; that kid is earning himself a scholarship someday. Obviously he’s making our team a much better team. He works his tail off; I am real proud of him.”

Dudeck certainly experienced a moment of fatherly pride when his sons connected for their electrifying second quarter touchdown.

“As a dad I am absolutely thrilled for Brendan to throw it to David like that a couple of a weeks in a row here,” said a smiling Dudeck, noting that the brothers had also hooked up for a scoring strike in the Penn Charter game.

“As David went down the sideline, I was thinking just keep running lad. They were thrilled. On a personal side, as a family we are having a special year to have both of those guys playing.”

The Hun offense played well as it executed its plan to run the ball down Lawrenceville’s throat.

“We knew they were going to put a ton of people in the box,” explained Dudeck, who got 130 yards rushing from Morgan.

“We felt that our guys up front are big and strong and we felt between Colin, Josiah Williams, and Brendan Morgan that we could run the ball a little bit. We were kind of defiant, knowing that they were bringing the guys up and we still wanted to try to run the ball.”

On the defensive side of the ball, the Raiders showed some defiance as well.

“We played great in the defensive backfield,” added Dudeck. “Our defensive line and our linebackers were awesome. Between Leo Chubinishvili and Shane McCullough, that whole crew up front did a good job.”

In Dudeck’s view, the Raiders did a good job collectively in bouncing back from the disappointing loss to Penn Charter.

“Our kids were miserable after last week; we had that team where we wanted going into the fourth quarter and the kids let down,” said Dudeck.

“Instead of putting their tails between their legs, they came out and practiced as hard as they have ever practiced this week. They were real hungry for Lawrenceville.”

Hun will need to keep showing that hunger for improvement as they host formidable Blair (3-1 overall, 1-0 MAPL) on October 17.

“Our kids are learning and they are getting better,” asserted Dudeck. “This was a big game. I said to them please enjoy this game tonight and tomorrow and have a ton of fun with it. Once we hit the practice field on Monday, we will be thinking about Blair. They are going to be good. I know they will be huge up front; it’s never easy with Blair.”

Weingrad, for his part, is thinking about a MAPL title. “We came off the loss last week and we came out hard this week,” said Weingrad. “We want to win the MAPL, this is another stepping stone to winning it.”
