At its meeting last Thursday, the Princeton Public Library Board of Trustees approved a budget for 2008 totaling $4,922,237. Library Director Leslie Burger described the budget as “exactly what we asked for,” and thanked the Borough and the Township for their respective contributions. Last year’s total budget was $4,550,390.
Salary and wages account for the biggest budget allocation — $2,628,514 — followed by benefits, and administrative costs. The library’s total operating budget for 2008 is $4,679,237. Revenue from municipal parking, expected to be $100,000, and a capital improvements request of $143,000 account for the balance. Among the proposed capital improvements for the coming year are computer/server replacements, new media shelving, supplemental air conditioning for the server room, and lighting improvements. Ms. Burger noted that a new machine for validating parking receipts had successfully supplanted an older, malfunctioning one, and that a third machine had been ordered as well.
Three upcoming events sponsored by the Friends were noted by the group’s president, Pam Wakefield. They include a Children’s Book Festival on September 13; the Friends Annual Book Sale, from October 3 through 5; and the Friends Annual Benefit, which will feature journalist Evan Thomas talking about “the Race for the Presidency” on October 24. Ms. Wakefield noted that the Friends are “incredibly excited” about the Children’s Book Festival, and that “outstanding collections” have enriched the stock at the book sale.
The latest issue of the library’s magazine, Connections, was distributed and the board commented on its striking appearance. The 28-page journal, which is available for free at the library, includes a feature article about Mr. Thomas, a list of authors and selected titles to be highlighted at the Children’s Book Festival, and details about other coming events at the library.
Mr. Burger announced the recent appointment of Dow Jones Executive Dick Levine as a new Trustee representing the Township, and the promotion of part-time assistant Lindsey Forden to full-time development coordinator.
