Town Talk

A forum for Princeton residents to express opinions about local and national issues

Question of the Week:

"Do you think that Don Imus's firing was appropriate?"

"Yes, I do. I think that he caused a great deal of harm to people but, more importantly, the marketplace is working as his sponsors and supporters have spoken. His bosses realize that he no longer has support for the kind of programming he does."

Lorna Kaluzny, Dodds Lane

"I think that it was appropriate that he was fired but I would have preferred if he had been suspended for perhaps a lengthy period of time. I would have liked to have seen him use his influence and money to have the opportunity for redemption. I think that he could have done a great deal for African-American women and I will personally miss some of the best interviewing ever heard or seen on radio and television."

Elaine Armas, Sayre Drive

"I think that it is appropriate to have some kind of threshold in entertainment even for someone who's a 'shock jock!' He went past that threshold."

Steve Raffuel, Moore Street

"No, I do not think that this firing was appropriate. He uses racial and ethnic comments in his show on a regular basis and this one falls in line with the rest. He was implicated for this comment but not any of the others. He could have been taken off the air for a time but there are a lot of comedians who do this as part of their act with no repercussions. This language is so common in every day life that to make so much of this is not sensible. He was trying to relate to the Hip-Hop groups in his audience."

Alexandra Floyd, Birch Avenue

"I think that his firing may have been too much. Sanctions should have been imposed for a one-time offense. If this was an ongoing pattern of behavior then firing could be considered but in this case, it was not appropriate. He also makes many positive contributions to the community at large with his ranch for cancer kids and the Telethon that he was prevented from hosting the past few days."

Manny Diaz, Witherspoon Street
