Princeton Borough Council is looking into a recently discovered problem that presents an obstacle to outside dining at the Calico Grill restaurant. Apparently the Hilton Realty Co., which owns the 180 Nassau Street building housing Cox’s Market, Calico Grill, and the photographer Pryde Brown, have been using parking spaces that are in fact owned by the Borough of Princeton. A lease for the parking spots between the Borough and the building’s original owner Bob Cox expired in 1963. The situation was brought to light after Alan and Marguerite Heap, the owners of the building and of Calico Grill, took their request for an amendment of the historic preservation plan that would allow for outdoor dining to a hearing of the Historic Preservation Review Committee last December. Calico Grill, located behind Cox’s Market, wants to place two tables for two and two tables for four on what they thought was their own property. Instead they found out that they may owe rent on the outdoor space. Members of the Council were briefed on the parking problem by Borough Administrator Robert W. Bruschi last week and it is hoped that a resolution can be found. (LA)
