John Barton Young, 74, known as Jack or Papa to friends and family, died surrounded by his family on December 7.
Born in Chevy Chase, Md., to Jane and Edgar Young, he was raised in Chevy Chase and Summit, N.J., and spent summers as a child at Camp Red Cloud on Lake Champlain. He lived in New York City, Cranbury, N.J., and spent the past 35 years in Princeton.
He graduated in 1958 from DePauw University. During his senior year he married Lois Dickason, his best friend for 53 years.
He worked as a director in New York City theatre and for the Riverside Church theatre; National Geographic, as an independent filmmaker; and the American Red Cross. He was an active member of the Nassau Presbyterian Church in Princeton.
An idea man who was unstoppable in his passion to bring his creative thoughts to life, he loved sailing, hiking, photography, and travel. There was never an adventure too big for him to take on, and he always brought others along with him.
His summers were spent at a family home on Deer Isle, Maine, where he enjoyed sailing Penobscot Bay by day and sitting by a warm fire with a good book by night.
He and his wife are founders of Cetana Educational Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to developing human resources for Burma/Myanmar.
He is survived by his wife, Lois; his children, Jennifer Young Suddath, David Young, Charlie Young, and Georgann Young; and eight grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service celebrating his life at 2 p.m. on December 18 at the Nassau Presbyterian Church in Princeton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cetena Educational Foundation, 90 Mt. Lucas Road, Princeton, N.J. 08540.
Margaret Gartner Cronk, long-time, former resident of Princeton, died August 5 in Toronto following a lengthy illness.
Predeceased by her husband, Arnold, and her daughter, Sandra; she is survived by her daughters Cindy Nowina and Barbara Clayton; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Interment in the Princeton cemetery will take place on Thursday, December 16 at 2 p.m.
