The theme of the year 2009 on the local sports scene was surprise.
Bob Surace had the time of his life during his playing days on the Princeton University football team in the late 1980s.
The Millville, N.J. native was an All-Ivy League center who culminated his career by playing on the 1989 league co-champions team.
When Surace (pronounced “suh-RACE”) looks back on his days at Princeton, though, the highlights extend far beyond the football field.
“There were a lot of great memories that were made here,” said Surace, 41, a 1990 Princeton alum.
Courtney Banghart knows what it takes to win the Ivy League title in women’s basketball.
As a star guard for Dartmouth and then assistant coach at her alma mater, Banghart has been part of four Ivy champions.
Now in her third year as the head coach of the Princeton University women’s basketball team, Banghart has the Tigers looking formidable with the league season around the corner.
Molly Barber saw her herself as a facilitator last winter as she joined the Princeton High girls’ basketball team.
Focusing on setting up senior teammates like Keisha Brown and Casey Moran, point guard Barber helped PHS win six of its last 10 games as it rebounded from a 1-11 start.
This winter, junior Barber knows that her Little Tiger teammates are depending on her to provide more offensive production.
