Applications are now available for the Mercer County Bar Foundation Scholarship. Since the early 1960’s, the Foundation has awarded scholarships to students with ties to Mercer County who show financial need, are involved in community organizations, and are pursuing a legal education in an accredited law school. Applications must be completed and returned by July 31. Volunteers at the Princeton studio of Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D) will celebrate Record-A-Thon 2011, from Monday, February 28, through Saturday, March 5. The event coincides with Read Across America Day, celebrated on Dr. Seuss’s birthday, March 2. Record-A-Thon is a marathon week when Princeton studio volunteers will keep the facility’s recording booths full to increase production of accessible educational content for RFB&D’s library, the largest accessible textbook library in the nation. The organization’s mission is to promote personal achievement by advancing the use of accessible and effective educational solutions when access and/or reading are barriers to learning. The volunteers will be joined by local authors who are adding their voices to the cause including award winning poets Lois Marie Harrod, author of Brief Term and Spelling the World Backwards, and B.J. Ward, author of Gravedigger’s Birthday. Also recording from their books will be John Frederick, author of A Royal American: A New Jersey Officer in the King’s Service during the Revolution; Paul Marciano, author of Carrots and Sticks Don’t Work: Build a Culture of Employee Engagement with the Principles of RESPECT; and Nikki Stern, author of Because I Say So: The Dangerous Appeal of Moral Authority. Other goals for the week are to raise funds, raise awareness of the different ways children read and learn, and recruit new volunteers to help with RFB&D’s vital work. The Princeton studio is located on the campus of St. Joseph’s Seminary at 69 Mapleton Road in Plainsboro.
