A CALL TO ACTION: Visiting Fellow at Princeton University Van Jones, who is also a former advisor on green jobs and innovation to the Obama Administration, delivered the keynote lecture at the University’s annual Martin Luther King Day celebration. He called on students to use their technological savvy and powers of innovation to pose solutions to global concerns like climate change and unsustainable energy usage.

Mark Emann was admitted last week into a pretrial intervention (PTI) program that requires a 12-month period of supervision, 40 hours of community service, and restitution to Princeton Township. The 52-year-old former police chief appeared in court to enter a plea of not guilty to an accusation charging him with “third-degree theft by deception.”
A new study of the Princeton Fire Department, the first one to be conducted in over 20 years, will shed light on the operation and efficiency of each of the three fire companies. It is slated to provide recommendations as to cost savings, restructuring, and maintaining a vibrant volunteer firefighting force.
Van Jones, former advisor to the Obama Administration on green jobs and innovation who is currently a visiting fellow at Princeton University, delivered the keynote address at the Martin Luther King Day Celebration in Richardson Auditorium on Monday. He addressed his talk primarily to students, calling on them to apply themselves to solve the pressing problems facing the world.
Executive Director of the Princeton Public Library Leslie Burger reported on the state of the institution in 2010, calling it a “really wonderful year.”
“The original timeline is not shot yet, but we’re getting closer and closer to that point,” said new Recreation Department Executive Director Ben Stentz in the wake of last week’s meeting about pool developments.
To celebrate Leonard L. Milberg’s recent donation of an Irish prose collection containing over 1,700 books, manuscripts, portraits, audio visual materials and other items that illustrate the richness and vitality of Irish writing from 1798 to the present, Princeton University has planned an exhibition that will open on Friday, January 28, and a symposium on Saturday and Sunday, February 5-6, titled “The Cracked Lookingglass: Highlights from the Leonard L. Milberg Collection of Irish Prose Writers.”
The exhibition, which runs through July 10, will be on view in the main gallery and in the Milberg Gallery at Firestone Library.

The first time I listened to the Beach Boys song “Disney Girls” from the Surf’s Up album, I thought I hadn’t heard right, so I played it again. Sure enough. “Hi Rick and Dave, Hi Pop, good morning Mom” is the line sung by Bruce Johnston, who also wrote the song. What kind of a lyric is that? Rick and Dave who? Pop and mom? It’s a mystery unless you happen to be familiar with the slice of American sitcom life called The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.
Sarah Treem describes what she learned from Emily Mann’s Still Life (1980) in creating her own play, The How and the Why, currently running at McCarter’s Berlind Theatre in a world premiere production directed by Ms. Mann: “You put people in a room who have very good reasons to be furious at each other and you don’t let them leave. That’s how you create dramatic tension. The How and the Why is somewhat based on that principle.”
Borough resident Dana Sheridan develops and coordinates programs for children, families, and schools at Princeton University’s Cotsen Children’s Library. She received her PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Virginia, and while her academic career focused on how children learn in informal, non-school environments (particularly museums), her professional passion has always been the design of dynamic hands-on programs for children.
