HIGH FLYER: Former Princeton University men’s hockey star Darroll Powe heads up the ice in recent action for the Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL. Powe, a 2007 PU graduate who scored 60 points in his Tiger career, has emerged as a solid performer for the Flyers in his second campaign with the team. The burly 5’11, 212-pound forward has 11 points so far this season in 31 appearances. |
Darroll Powe has fond memories of his days walking down the hallway to the ice at Baker Rink while playing for the Princeton University men’s hockey team.
But Powe’s recent journey to a different ice surface symbolized just how far the Princeton product has come.
As a member of the Philadelphia Flyers, Powe hit the ice on New Year’s Day when the Flyers faced off against the Boston Bruins in the NHL’s Winter Classic at Fenway Park.
With all due respect to the friendly confines of Baker, walking out to play at Fenway was a bit more memorable.
Over the holidays, Jackie Gaudioso-Radvany just had to gaze at her wrist for a reminder of the unforgettable debut season she had this past fall with the University of North Carolina field hockey team.
“I look at my gold national championship watch a couple of times a day and I say did this actually happen,” said Gaudioso-Radvany, a former Stuart Country Day School star who helped win UNC the NCAA title last November.
“I am so grateful. I thank all the people that helped me along the way. I had a lot of support from my family and many others. It was a joint effort, not just me.”
John Marsh dug himself a hole last Wednesday as he wrestled Matt Herbert of Notre Dame at 130 pounds.
The Princeton High junior star trailed 5-2 early in the third period but knew he couldn’t dwell on the score in mounting a rally.
“Coach [Rashone] Johnson always says that if you go down by any amount of points, think about the next point and the next move,” said Marsh.
Savannah Hecker has embraced the extra responsibility that comes with being a senior co-captain for the Princeton Day School girls’ hockey team.
“I feel like I should step up more,” said Hecker. “I should be a big leader on and off the ice. My teammates know they can come to talk to me if they need help with anything.”
Last Thursday, the senior defenseman stepped up on both ends of the ice as PDS topped arch rival Princeton High 8-5.
Offensively, Hecker helped trigger the Panther attack, scoring two goals and getting two assists. On defense, Hecker directed traffic around the crease area as PDS held off a late PHS charge.
Grant Fiorentinos is a good enough basketball player to compete for England’s Under-18 national team.
But with his basketball ambitions extending beyond the English hoops scene, Fiorentinos has come across the Atlantic to join the Hun School boys’ basketball team to become even better.
“One of my coaches on the English national team saw Hun as a great education and a basketball school and led me to come here to perform,” said junior center Fiorentinos, speaking in a clipped English accent.
“I need the academics and basketball to get into that Division I college and then every boy’s dream, the NBA after that.”
