VISIONS OF IRAN: Homa Watts shows off a variety of books on Iran, including some featuring Isfahan and Shiraz, Iranian art, and one among the multitude of published “Rubiyats” during Sunday’s “Exploring Iran: An Afternoon of Iranian and Persian Culture.” Held at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton, the event was sponsored by the Coalition for Peace Action in conjunction with the local Iranian community. The size of the turn-out suggests that hundreds of people responded to the promise of a “taste of Iran’s vibrant culture” and a chance to meet “the real people behind the headlines.”

Chekhov’s Samovar and Schubert’s Foot: A Birthday Column

Stuart Mitchner

Yesterday, January 29, was Chekhov’s birthday. Tomorrow is Schubert’s. Never mind the formalities, full names, death dates, and such, Chekhov and Schubert are with us, like tea and coffee, sunrise and sunset, and they make a nice pair of bookends for a January 30 column. Since this is billed as a book review, however, and since I celebrated Schubert last year on his birthday, my focus will be on Chekhov.

Notoriously elusive in discussing what his plays are all about, Edward Albee, in his program notes, explains that “a play is fully described (or explained) by the experience of seeing it.” He urges his audiences to “pretend you’re at the first play you’ve ever seen — have that experience — and I think ‘what the play is about’ will reveal itself quite readily.”
