New Jersey law requires all home improvement contractors doing work in the state to be registered with the New Jersey State Division of Consumer Affairs. Registration numbers begin with 13VH. Consumers who are considering hiring a contractor are encouraged to get the number and call (908) 273-8090, or check the state contractor database online at www.NJConsumerAffairs.gov/LVinfo.htm. Poor or unfinished work by a hired contractor is the number one complaint received by the Department of Consumer Affairs, and that agency is aggressively seeking out contractors who engage in fraudulent practices. While any criminal activity should be reported to the local police department, any civil or breach-of-contract issues can be reported directly to the Mercer County Department of Consumder Affairs at (609) 989-6671, or toll free at (800) 242-5846.
