Slated to Open in September, New Merwick Boasts State-of-the-Art Design Amenities

Construction on the new Merwick Care and Rehabilitation Center — located in Plainsboro across the street from the new University Medical Center campus on Plainsboro Road — is ahead of schedule, with the facility slated to open in September.

The building development and administration of the facility represent a joint venture partnership between Princeton HealthCare System and Windsor Healthcare. Merwick’s mission is to provide long term nursing, subacute care, and rehabilitation services to patients, with the new center to be twice the size of the current establishment on Bayard Lane.

While Merwick’s present location in the Borough has been sold to Princeton University, its operation at that site will continue until the new space in Plainsboro is ready for use.

With 200 beds in the facility, 80 will be for subacute care and 120 for long term residential care, and the building will feature green design elements, along with amenities to enhance the patient experience. A 3,500 square foot gym for physical therapy and occupational therapy will also be located onsite.

Nursing stations will all have wireless capabilities, and patient tracking will also be available.

Maximizing natural light is one goal of the design, and patient rooms will have built-in furnishings, high ceilings, and views of the Millstone River, with green landscaping in the surrounding areas, and a 32-acre public park.

“The forward thinking and the care that have gone into the design and construction of Merwick are the perfect complement to the medical center we’re building across the street,” said President and CEO of the Princeton HealthCare System Barry Rabner. “Between these two facilities, we have the foundation of an unrivaled healthcare campus here in the heart of New Jersey.”

With respect to the design elements, Hyman Jacobs, president of Windsor Health Care, noted that “the form of the building is not different just for the sake of being different.”

The building itself involves a series of residential wings arranged in various angles to create outdoor courtyard space, and to increase views of the surrounding green space.

“The layout contributes to a better experience for the residents and patients and creates a more efficient workplace for our caregivers,” Mr. Jacobs said.
