After receiving an award for “sustainable fund-raising” at the American Library Association meeting in Washington, The Friends of the Princeton Public Library Book Sale got some more good news when NPR interviewed co-chair Sherri Garber and ran a segment Tuesday and Wednesday of last week about the Book Sale’s success at a time when book stores are hurting.

The Coalition for Peace Action is cosponsoring the free opening night screening of the documentary, Countdown to Zero, on Friday, July 30, at the Ritz at the Bourse Theater in Philadelphia. The 90-minute film about the necessity and feasibility of global abolition of nuclear weapons will start at 7:45 p.m., sharp. A panel discussion with Todd Fine, Mary Boardman, and Kim-Thao Nguyen will follow. A $10 gift certificate to buy popcorn, candy, and soft drinks will be given to those who reserve seats prior to the event. For more information visit www.peacecoalition.org.

Cyclists in Mercer County could get a bit more “shoulder room” under a proposal by Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes to explore the addition of bike lanes when major roadway improvements are made to County routes. Though not yet formalized, Hughes’s policy proposal is already bearing fruit. In Princeton, when Washington Road (CR 571) between US Route 1 and Faculty Road is restriped, edge lines will be placed to accommodate future bicycle lanes from Faculty Road to the Princeton Junction Train Station. And a feasibility study for the County’s first designated bicycle route on CR 546 (Washington Crossing — Pennington-Lawrenceville Road) has just been completed.
