CHICAGO FIRE: Matt Godlewski controls the puck in action this past winter during his freshman season with the Princeton University men’s hockey team. Earlier this month, the 6’1, 190-pound defenseman got a taste of the pro game as he played in the Chicago Blackhawks 2008 Prospects camp.

Matt Godlewski was looking forward to a quiet summer.

The sophomore defenseman for the Princeton University men’s hockey team planned to spend a lot of time on the lake near his family’s home in Elk River, Minn. when he wasn’t going through his individual skating and conditioning routines.

But then Godlewski got a phone call from Tiger assistant coach Keith Fisher that changed his plans.

She was the senior superstar of the 2006 Princeton University women’s open crew but Caroline Lind wasn’t a cool customer as the boat hit the water at Lake Mercer for the NCAA championship race.

“I was so nervous; the first thing I remember is that I couldn’t eat breakfast that day,” said Lind.

“I tried to eat a bagel and cream cheese and I could eat just half the bagel. I remember being in the race and being up a boat length and still being so exhausted and thinking like push harder, push harder.”

When Steve Coppola entered high school, he saw basketball as his main sport.

Although Coppola was on his way to reaching a towering 6’8, his parents decided that his height and energy might serve him well on the water.

“I first started rowing when I was 14; my parents signed me up for a summer rowing camp to get me out of their hair,” recalled Coppola, a native of Buffalo, N.Y. “They just couldn’t tell me to stop after that.”

It would have been easy for Mike Williston and his teammates on It’s A Grind to throw in the towel as they played Princeton Youth Sports last Monday in the playoffs of the Princeton Recreation Department Men’s Summer Basketball League.

Starting the game with just four players, eighth-seeded It’s A Grind found itself trailing No. 11 PYS 16-4 some 10 minutes into the contest. With a fifth player showing up, It’s A Grind reeled off a 13-0 run to get back into the game.

Trailing by three early in the second half, It’s A Grind was reduced to four bodies for the rest of the evening after one of its players was ejected from the game.
