“The computer business is like being part of a revolution,” says Chris Beyer, owner of technician X at 1340 Route 206 South in Skillman. “We’re participating in constantly changing technology that has really changed the world. The ease of accessing information is phenomenal!”

technician X, in business since 2004, offers full computer service, with a focus on security and repair.

Moreover, they enjoy helping everyone feel comfortable with this amazing tool, whose purpose, after all, is to make life easier.

“If you buy a computer, and it doesn’t increase your productivity or help you communicate more quickly, it is not working for you,” explains Mr. Beyer. “Some people new to computers get so worried about them, even to the point that they’re afraid they’ll break them. They forget a computer is there to help them. We want it to work for you!”

Older people are becoming more comfortable with computer use, he adds, and of course, for younger people of all ages, computers are an assumed part of one’s lifestyle.

“The younger the customer, the more knowledgeable they are,” reports Mr. Beyer. “But we help all ages to feel really comfortable. We have a great customer base — both business and personal. It’s a real mix of ages, backgrounds, and all levels of computer ability and needs. A lot of people ask questions, and we do our best to educate them.”

To familiarize customers with the technology of the computer, technician X has displayed a computer with its inner workings exposed. It is fascinating to behold, and makes the entire process even more amazing.

“The Think Pad laptop from Lenovo is very popular now,” notes Mr. Beyer. “It is very durable and secure. Also, Hewlett-Packard laptops and desktops and Dell business computers are all available.

“Our real specialty is security,” he continues, “whether it’s a business with proprietary information or for personal use with private information about finances, children, etc. We want to make sure you can access data on your computer, and no one else can. There are pieces of software and hardware that will protect your computer from hackers, viruses, and malware.”

Customized Systems

“Also,” he adds, “we build customized systems from basic to high-end (including gaming systems). We are set apart because we can fix a computer remotely, come to your house or office, or you can bring it to us for repair here. We do all our own repairs ourselves.

“Repair is a big part of our business, as is configuring the computer system to make it work safely and coordinate with all your programs — printer, scanner, etc. Our staff are all trained professionals, all with their area of expertise, and they do this work all the time.”

Customers like the friendly, down-to-earth atmosphere at technician X, and while the staff members are indeed highly skilled professionals in the world of cyberspace, they can communicate easily with those less technologically aware.

“This is very important to us,” says Mr. Beyer, who had previously owned The Workstation in Princeton. “We want people to feel welcome and comfortable here. No one should be intimidated. This is a dynamic business. There is always a new challenge, always new technology to figure out. It’s new every day. The technology is just exploding.”

Keeping up-to-date with the latest advances requires determination and dedication, he adds. “Lenovo and Microsoft offer great support, and we go to classes, get information on-line, and do a lot of reading. It all changes so quickly now, you have to be sure to keep up.”
