In the only contested municipal race in Princeton, Jo Butler and Roger Martindell won the Borough’s Democratic Primary on Tuesday for the two available ballot positions for November’s election, garnering 546 and 422 votes, respectively. Challenger Anne Neumann received 397 votes.
Since no Republican candidates have filed to run for Council seats in November’s election, the two victors in the Democratic primary will likely be sworn in for three-year Council terms in January. Mr. Martindell has been a Councilman since 1989, whereas Ms. Butler would be sitting behind the dais for the first time.
A longtime resident active in the life of the town, Ms. Butler is a founding member of the Citizens Finance Advocacy Taskforce, formed last year to take a close look at the Borough’s budget in hopes of finding additional areas for cost-savings. An active member in the Princeton Community Democratic Organization (PCDO), she supports municipal consolidation, saying that joining forces with the Township would be wise for regional planning and the future.
During the PCDO meeting on Tuesday night at Conte’s Pizzeria, Mr. Martindell thanked those present for “being interested in the democratic process,” saying that “in the end, we’re a civic-minded community that is unparalleled.”
Current Council President Andrew Koontz did not seek reelection this year because he is running for Mercer County Freeholder. He thanked those present, noting that he was looking forward to the “new challenge.”
Liz Lempert and Lance Liverman were running unopposed for two seats on Township Committee. While no Republicans are on the primary ballot for the Township, any challengers running for the seats would have to gain 33 write-in votes each for their names to appear on the ballot in November.
On the Republican side, Princeton resident Scott Sipprelle won the primary for the 12th Congressional district against challenger David Corsi in a 110 to 14 vote. Gino A. Melone ran unopposed for County Clerk, and James V. Castelize III and Russell Wojtenko, Jr. did likewise for the positions of County Freeholders.
Other Democratic primary winners, who also ran unopposed, were Congressman Rush Holt, for the 12th Congressional district, Anthony P. Carabelli and Mr. Koontz for County Freeholders, and Paula Sollami Covello for County Clerk.
