Those interested in contributing to Japan earthquake and Pacific tsunami relief may visit redcross.org or text “Redcross” to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Donations made by residents of Mercer County to the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey office will be sent to the National American Red Cross office and then dispatched to the Japanese Red Cross Society. The organization is currently seeking only monetary donations.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has awarded the Princeton Fire Department $361,500 in federal funding to help recruit and hire new firefighters. The fire department successfully applied for the grant through DHS’s “Assistance to Firefighters Grants” program and specifically the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response. “The Assistance to Firefighters Grants program provides direct support to fire departments seeking to improve their first responders’ preparedness and ability to protect the health and safety of the public,” said Congressman Rush Holt (D-12) in his announcement of the award.

The Woodrow Wilson School will host a policy forum focusing on improved health care for children, on Friday, March 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Dodds Auditorium (Corner of Washington and Prospect Streets). Enactment of health care reform creates the opportunity to improve health care access, coverage, quality and outcomes for children in New Jersey. Key components of federal health care reform that will be examined include health insurance exchanges, new eligibility and enrollment standards, and a new vision for Medicaid and the Children’s Health Improvement Program. The event is being presented by the Woodrow Wilson School; the Center for Health & Wellbeing; The Future of Children; Children’s Futures; and Advocates for Children of New Jersey.

The public is invited to stop by Princeton Battlefield State Park on Saturday, March 19, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a reenactment of 18th century New Jersey militiamen going through “spring training” in the handling of flintlock muskets, close order drill, and maneuvers common during the Revolutionary War. Clarke House volunteers will be demonstrating daily activities of a local farm family in the Clarke House Museum, and the exhibit, “Arms of the Revolution” will be open. Admission is free. Dr. Hanan Ashrawi — writer, activist, legislator, and spokesperson for the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) — will be the speaker at this year’s Edward Said Memorial Lecture, “The Dislocation of Palestine,” at Princeton University on Tuesday, March 22, at 5 p.m. in McCosh 10.
