The Princeton Senior Resource Center (PSRC) has received an anonymous gift of $250,000, designated to be used to support staff and to ensure the long-term stability of the organization. “We are so appreciative of this very generous and totally unexpected gift,” said PSRC Executive Director Susan W. Hoskins.

Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes will join the County Department of Veteran Services and County and local officials at a Veterans Day Ceremony at noon on Sunday, November 7. The Mercer County Military Service Medal will be presented to 13 veterans and he many County residents who have served in America’s armed forces will also be acknowledged. The ceremony will take place at the Catholic War Veterans Post 417 at 301 Grand Street in Trenton.

With winter approaching, residents are reminded that the County’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) allows individuals meeting various income qualifications to apply for bill payment assistance, energy crisis assistance, and energy-related home repairs. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) expects households heating primarily with heating oil to spend an average of about $220 (12 percent) more this winter than last winter, while households heating primarily with natural gas are expected spend an average of $27 (four percent) more this winter. Homes heated primarily with electricity can expect to spend an average of $18 (two percent) less. The EIA also cautioned, however, that fuel expenditures for individual households are dependent on local weather conditions, the size and efficiency of individual homes and their heating equipment, and thermostat settings. Last year’s clients can expect to receive applications from the Mercer County Housing and Community Development Office during the first two weeks of November. The public is invited to attend a panel on “The Politics of Food and Health Care” with Marion Nestle, David Kessler, and Ruth Reichl at 4:30 p.m. on November 10 in McCosh 50 on the Princeton University Campus. Supported by the Stafford Little Lecture Fund, the panelists will focus on “how societal, economic and corporate forces, along with our biological predisposition to consume fat, sugar, and salt, have created a political culture that supports cheap and unhealthy food products, rewards consolidation and mechanization in the food/agriculture industry and fuels ever-rising costs of treating the diet-related disease epidemics. The discussion will frame the political/policy problems as well as the physiological factors, then propose and discuss solutions that could win favor from both parties.” For more information, visit http://lectures.princeton.edu/?p=831.
