Town Talk

A forum for Princeton residents to express opinions about local and national issues

Question of the Week:

“Do you agree with the decision the Mercer County Prosecutor made in releasing Congo, the German Shepherd, to his owners while an appeal is pending in Superior Court?”

“No, I don’t agree with it. I think that people should be more careful with their dogs and that they should be sure that people are safe when they are around them. I am a dog owner and I am always very careful with my dogs.”

David Carroll, Hopewell

“Yes, I do. I think that they can find a solution that is a little less draconian than killing the dog. They can impose restrictions on the animal and make the owners be more careful. Once again, it is one of these cases where it is not the dog that is the problem but where training is the problem. The owner and the dog should be required to be more careful where the dog goes and who it is allowed to see or be in touch with but the dog should not be put to sleep.”

Carol Carlson, Hopewell Township

“I absolutely agree. From what I’ve read, the dog has never bitten anyone before and that animal control has had no record of any problems. I feel that Congo was protecting his family and he was doing what a German shepherd does. However, if he bites a second time then he has to go.”

Janice Cibelli, Lawrenceville

“Yes — 100 percent. I love animals and I think that they are often misread. Other people who don’t like animals perhaps do not understand them and what to do with them. In this particular case I think that the dog was defending his owner.”

Kathleen Stanchak, Clifton

“I think that the dog should definitely live because who knows what really happened? He should be watched for a little while to see what his behavior is as he may or may not have done anything wrong. If he is bad, then he should be sent to a place to make him better — but he should not be killed.”
