The Princeton-based Coalition for Peace Action (CFPA) will hold an October 7 vigil on Palmer Square to mark the eighth anniversary of the war in Afghanistan. From 6 to 6:45 p.m. participants will hold posters; from approximately 6:45 to 7 p.m. they will close by holding candles as darkness falls. “We need to press hard now, while President Obama pauses to consider the request for another major escalation, so we can prevent an endless war with tens of thousands more American soldiers and Afghani civilians killed, before our elected officials finally heed the will of the American people,” said the Rev. Household Chemical and Electronic Waste Disposal Day will be held on Saturday, October 10, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., for Mercer County residents who would like to recycle common residential waste or electronics. Hosted by the Mercer County Improvement Authority, the event will take place at the John T. Dempster Fire School, 350 Lawrence Station Road, in Lawrence, rain or shine. No registration is necessary, but attendees will need to show proof of residency. No commercial or industrial waste will be accepted. Hughes reminds residents that as of February 17 television stations, by law, stopped transmitting their analog signal and now transmit only their digital signal. For some people, this may be the opportune time to purchase a new television set. Mr. Hughes urges people to take advantage of this Electronic Waste Disposal Day to safely discard their obsolete televisions. Other acceptable household items include aerosol cans, household or car batteries, rechargeable batteries, photographic chemicals, used motor oil and oil filters, lighter fluid, propane gas tanks, pesticides/herbicides, pool chemicals, oil based paint, paint thinners, stains/varnishes, gasoline, anti-freeze, gas/oil mixes, driveway sealer, insect repellants, and mercury.

Howell Living History Farm will host its annual Pumpkin, Popcorn, and Indian Corn Harvest on Saturday, October 10. Activities will include pumpkin- and Indian corn-picking, and guessing the weight of large pumpkins. Children can attend a craft workshop from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for $2, or help farmers process pumpkins for livestock feed throughout the day. Mayor Bernie Miller encourages Township residents interested in having trees from the Township’s nursery planted near their homes to contact arborist Greg O’Neil at (609) 921-7077 or goneil@princeton-township.nj.us. Mr. O’Neil is compiling a list of candidate plantings for the spring that will be presented to the Shade Tree Commission. Mr. Miller reported that about 30 trees are being planted this fall, with approximately the same number planned for the spring.
