George Kearns, 82, died September 7 in Hanover, N.H.
He received his BA from Yale University and his PhD from Boston University. Professor Emeritus of Literature at Rutgers University, he was the author of two books on the poet, Ezra Pound, and of many articles, reviews, and essays on British and American literature.
Not only was he a fine scholar, but he was an inspirational teacher whose brilliant mind, dry wit, and immense learning were informed by great kindness. He is remembered with gratitude and celebrated by many friends, students, and colleagues.
He is survived by his wife, Cleo McNelly Kearns; his son, Christopher Angel Kearns; and his sister, Maureen Howard.
A memorial service will be held at the Princeton University Chapel at 1:30 p.m. on October 24.

Rose Skodacek, 97, of Princeton, died October 10 in the University Medical Center at Princeton.
Born in Czechoslovakia, she resided most of her life in Griggstown.
She was the oldest member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Rocky Hill. Along with her husband, Paul, she owned and operated Skodacek Farm in Griggstown. A farmer’s wife, she enjoyed gardening, cooking, and people.
Wife of the late Paul Skodacek and mother of the late Richard Skodacek, she is survived by a son, Rudolph J. Skodacek; a sister, Katherine Lejnar; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 19 at Trinity Episcopal Church, Crescent Road, Rocky Hill. Burial will follow in Ten Mile Run Cemetery.
Friends may call on Monday, October 18 from 2 to 4 p.m., and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the M.J. Murphy Funeral Home, 616 Ridge Road at New Road, Monmouth Junction.
