Borough Council approved the creation of a Joint Revaluation Study Commission at its meeting last week. The commission, which would be jointly administered with Princeton Township, will investigate ways of ameliorating the effects of the recent tax reassessment in both municipalities, as well as collect data and explore how the revaluation was conducted and what effects it is having on residents.
The impetus for creating a commission was the considerable public outcry and call for a closer look at the methodology with which the tax assessment was conducted.
Borough Councilman Roger Martindell last month proposed a draft resolution calling for the creation of a commission comprised of volunteer members of the public to analyze the effects of the revaluation and potential solutions to assist property owners.
The commission will be comprised of residents from both the Borough and the Township who will be appointed by the mayors of the respective municipalities. With final numbers still to be determined, an equal number of citizens will represent each town, with a final tally of between 6 and 10 residents serving on the commission.
One member of Borough Council and one member of Township Committee, as well as the municipal Administrators, will also liase with the commission and will be non-voting members.
The joint tax assessor for both municipalities, Neal Snyder, will work with the commission in providing the requisite information and answering questions.
The activity of the commission will occur in the 90 days after its members have been approved and it is formally established. Reports are due to the governing bodies at that time.
In other news involving both municipalities, the Joint Consolidation and Shared Services Study Commission will host an open public meeting with the consultant, the Center for Governmental Research (CGR) on Thursday, October 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the John Witherspoon Middle School auditorium.
With CGR slated to present its plan of action to the community, the meeting will elaborate upon ways in which citizens can engage in the process, be updated on findings, and share their views.
One mode of communication is the recently developed website, www.cgr.org/princeton, that is open to the public to access information, post feedback, and stay abreast of any news through e-mail alerts.
The Consolidation and Joint Services Study Commission will also have its regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, October 27 at 7 p.m. in the Township Municipal Complex.
