After Getting Derailed by Injury Woes Last Winter, PU Men’s Hockey Sees Return to Health in 2010-11

Coming into last winter, the Princeton University men’s hockey team was the toast of ECAC Hockey.

In 2007-08, Princeton came out of nowhere to win the ECACH championship and advanced to its first NCAA tournament since 1998-99.

A year later, the Tigers spent most of the season ranked in the top 10 and posted a record on the way to the ECACH final four and earning an at-large bid to the NCAA tourney.

With the Princeton University men’s soccer team trailing Harvard 1-0 heading into the second half last Sunday, Tiger defender Teddy Schneider and his teammates held an impromptu meeting in the waning moments of intermission.

It may have looked like a bit of a mismatch when top-seeded and three-time defending county champion Princeton High boys’ soccer team hosted No.8 Pennington in the Mercer County Tournament quarterfinals last Monday.

Sydney Jenkins brought mixed emotions into her Senior Day with the Princeton Day School field hockey team last Wednesday as the Panthers hosted Hun in their regular season finale.

“On one side, it is our last game and we want to put it all out there and have no regrets,” said senior midfielder Jenkins.

“On the other side, we are going to miss field hockey and I am going to miss the team. I have been with my two co-captains [Courtney Klein and Cameron Giles] since I have been in first grade; that brought a more emotional aspect into the entire thing.”

They milled quietly around the bench and consoled each other as they packed their sticks for the quick trip across town.

While the players on the Hun School field hockey team were down in the dumps after losing 2-1 in overtime at crosstown rival Princeton Day School last Wednesday, Raider head coach Kathy Quirk managed to smile.
