Although Bob Surace is a former All-Ivy League center for Princeton University football team, he is applying an NFL blueprint as he takes the helm of his alma mater.
After spending the last nine seasons as an assistant coach with the Cincinnati Bengals, Surace has modeled his first preseason camp at Princeton after a tried and true NFL model.
“We did our training camp schedule that was no different from the one that Marv Levy originally set up,” said Surace, a 1990 PU alum brought in to replace Roger Hughes, who was relieved from his duties as Tiger head coach last November after a decade on the job.
Growing up in northern Jersey, Matt Zimmerman dreamed of someday competing for Princeton University.
“From the time I was a little kid I always wanted to go to Princeton,” said Zimmerman, a native of Mountainside.
After lettering in football, baseball, basketball, and track at Gov. Livingston High, Zimmerman got that chance, coming to PU in 2007 and joining the Tiger football team.
The 6’0, 220-pound Zimmerman became the starting fullback for the Tigers as a sophomore and comes into this fall as one of the team’s captains along with fellow seniors Steven Cody and Jordan Culbreath.
Sarah Hibbert had a feeling that her Princeton High girls’ tennis team would be in for a tough match when it battled Notre Dame last Friday.
But the PHS head coach never anticipated the three-hour and 30-minute marathon that ensued as the Little Tigers pulled out a 3-2 win.
“We expected it to be tough because we had a tight match last year but I didn’t think it was going to be like that,” said Hibbert, whose team picked up another big victory last Monday as it topped Hopewell Valley 4-1 to improve to 3-0 on the season.
“I am really proud of how the girls were ready to fight like that; it was a good team experience.”
Last fall, the Hun School boys’ soccer team showed a flair for drama.
The cardiac kid Raiders rallied several times to win a number of one-goal games on the way to a 12-4-3 record and the Mid-Atlantic Prep League (MAPL) title.
Welcoming back several key players from that squad, head coach Pat Quirk is hoping that his 2010 team can exhibit the same kind of character.
Julie Lambi has experienced plenty of season openers as a star field hockey player for Towson and then as a coach at Dickinson and West Chester.
But Lambi still felt plenty of butterflies last Thursday getting through her first game as the new head coach for the Stuart Country Day School field hockey team.
“It was different, high school is a different beast to conquer and there are things that are more nerve-wracking than others,” said Lambi, reflecting on her emotions as Stuart hosted Newton High.
